Tungsten disulfide (WS2) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are the two most widely used solid lubricants in industry. Both share the same layered crystal structure, which is what lets surfaces slide with very little resistance, but they behave differently under load, heat and vacuum. This guide compares the two and explains which one suits which application.

In brief: Choose WS2 when you need the lowest possible friction and the highest load capacity in a coated film. Its dynamic coefficient of friction is about 0.03, a coated film supports loads up to 300,000 psi, and it performs well in vacuum and at high temperatures. Choose MoS2 when you need a proven solid lubricant for extreme-pressure (EP) lubrication or as an additive in greases and oils. Its friction is somewhat higher than WS2 and its coated-film load capacity is about 250,000 psi, but it has the longest track record in general industrial use.

Everyday extreme-pressure lubrication and additive use. It blends well into greases and oils and works as a general dry-film coating on chains, gears, threads and EP wear points throughout a plant.
