Hex-Boron Nitride (hBN) Aerosol Spray

The Hexagonal Boron Nitride spray is a high-temperature anti-stick release agent and lubricant. When it is required to apply a thin film of Hexagonal Boron Nitride coating on a surface or any other hard-to-reach places the spray is convenient to use. The spray is available in 130z/ 370 gms cans. It is classified as dangerous goods.

Properties of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Aerosol spray

  • The spray has excellent lubricating properties.
  • It bonds well with the substrates and forms a coating film.
  • It has properties like good chemical inertness and an electrical insulator.
  • It is a good thermal conductor and this results in better heat dissipation.
  • It shows stability at high temperatures - 1000° C in air, 1400° C in a vacuum and 1800° C in inert gas.
  • Some of its properties are low thermal expansion, low dielectric constant and non-wetting.
  • It does not contain any fluorocarbons or leads and is not harmful to the ozone.

Applications of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Aerosol spray

  • It is used in welding and brazing to protect from weld splatter.
  • It is used in sintering to eliminate any sticking and carbon contamination.
  • It is used in plastic and rubber molds for release.
  • It is used in glass making as it improves mold/die life.
  • It is used in molten metal processing & metal forming as it prevents corrosion.
  • It is useful in casting, forging, extrusion and stamping.
  • It is used in high-temperature protective release coatings.

Boron Nitride coating

Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) can be applied directly to the surface requiring protection even if the surface is hot. It is not impregnated with molten metals. It remains consistent even at high temperatures and is inert to metals, glass and molten salts.

It is an ideal lubricant for hot parts and tools. It is a release agent and provides an effective coating to all very hot materials. It remains effective up to 800° C in air and 1950° C in inert gas and thus is a very good dry lubricant.

It is available as an aerosol spray or in a plastic bottle. When using the hBN spray, clean the surface to be coated and remove all the splashes from welding or melting work. Shake the spray well and spray about 70 cm from the surface. Apply in thin layers waiting for each layer to dry before applying the next.

Properties of Hexagonal Boron Nitride

  • It is a high-temperature lubricant and a high-temperature release agent.
  • It can be used as a protective coating for metals, ceramics, ceramic fibers and graphites.
  • It facilitates the casting of molten metals like aluminium, zinc, magnesium and lead.
  • It facilitates the sliding of press tools at very high temperatures.
  • It is a semiconductor at high temperatures and an insulator at room temperatures.

 Applications of Hexagonal Boron Nitride

  • It is used for thermocouple and probe protection.
  • It is used as a protection for casting tools.
  • It is used as a high-temperature lubricant in foundry molds, gasket wire drawing and more.
  • It is used in electrical insulation.
  • It is used as an additive for silicone and resin to improve thermal conductivity.
  • It is used as a release agent in metallurgy, the metallisation industry, plastic injection molds and more.
  • It is used as a protective layer for sintering and other applications.
  • The Boron Nitride coating is used to reduce friction and increase chemical inertness.
