Key WS2 Properties and Applications
Key Material Characteristics
- Very low friction solid lubricant
- Suitable for coated film applications under heavy load
- Well suited to high-temperature and vacuum lubrication assessment
- Compatible with oils, solvents, water, paint, and resin/plastic systems
Common Application Areas
- Dry-film lubrication of metal and plastic surfaces
- Additive in oils and liquid lubricant formulations
- Spray, buff or tumble coating applications
- Sliding and contact surfaces under high loads
- High-temperature and vacuum lubrication systems
- Formulations for paint, resin, plastic and compatible materials
Final suitability depends on particle dispersion, concentration, carrier medium, substrate, surface preparation, load, temperature and operating conditions. Testing before production use is recommended.
General WS2 Reference Values
| Coefficient of friction | 0.03 dynamic; 0.07 static |
|---|---|
| Load-bearing ability | 300,000 psi for coated film |
| Temperature range in normal atmosphere | −273°C to 650°C |
| Temperature range in vacuum | −188°C to 1,316°C |
These are general WS2 product-family reference values, not batch-specific test data for MK-WS2-06. Real-world performance depends on substrate, surface preparation, method of application and service conditions.
Safety, Handling and Storage
Store WS2 powder in a firmly closed container in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and avoid generating dust or aerosols. Provide sufficient exhaust ventilation at the source of dust and wear suitable gloves and eye protection.
In the common MK-WS2-xxx / MKN-WS2-xxx SDS, tungsten disulfide is classified as a skin irritant (Category 2), a serious eye irritant (Category 2A) and a specific target organ toxicant – single exposure (Category 3) for the respiratory system. DOT, IMDG and IATA transport status is listed as not dangerous goods. Review the SDS before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 0.6 micron APS mean?
APS refers to the average particle size. This grade has an average particle size of 0.6 micron, which should not be read as the complete particle-size distribution.
What applications can MK-WS2-06 be evaluated for?
It can be tested for dry-film lubrication, lubricant-additive systems, high-load sliding surfaces, high-temperature or vacuum lubrication, coatings and compatible resin or plastic formulations.
How can WS2 powder be applied?
Per the product-family brochure, WS2 powder may be blended into compatible liquid or material systems, and suitable surfaces can be coated by spraying, buffing or tumbling. Confirm final application parameters for your chosen procedure.
How should tungsten disulfide powder be stored and handled?
Keep the container firmly closed in a dry, well-ventilated location. Ensure adequate ventilation, avoid generating dust, and avoid skin and eye contact. Use the personal protective equipment indicated in the SDS.
Are the brochure and SDS specific to the 0.6 micron grade?
No. Common information is provided in the brochure and SDS for various grades of WS2 powder. The product number, purity, particle size, SKU, price and pack types mentioned on this page are applicable for MK-WS2-06.

WS2 powder
I used this 0.6 micron WS2 in my perkins 6.354.4 marine diesel engine at a rate of 8oz WS2 per oil change (10qts). The oil consumption dropped by 90% from a gallon every 100hours to a couple of cups. Been using this for years now and engine has 18k hours on it now. Wear on the cam has stopped, valves are still at the specified clearance after 8k hours of using this with every oil change. Be aware this settles out slowly in the pan, so start the engine at least every 3 weeks, which is good for the engine anyway.
