Key MoS2 Properties and Applications
Key Material Characteristics
- Dry solid lubricant with a hexagonal lamellar structure
- Good film-forming and lubricity properties in the absence of moisture
- Suitable for lubrication evaluation in inert atmosphere and high vacuum
- Extreme-pressure lubricant behaviour for high-load applications
- Compatible with oil, solvent, paint and fuel systems
Common Application Areas
- Lubricating greases and oil additive compositions
- Dry-film and solid lubrication applications
- Additive formulations for plastics and polymers
- Paints and other coating systems
- Cold metal forming and other high-load lubrication applications
- Vacuum and inert atmosphere lubrication systems
Final suitability depends on particle dispersion, concentration, carrier medium, substrate, load, temperature, humidity and operating conditions. Testing before production use is recommended.

These are general MoS2 product-family reference values from the brochure, not batch-specific test results for MK-MoS2-15. Actual performance depends on formulation, environment, substrate, load and operating conditions.
Safety, Handling and Storage
Store MoS2 powder in a tightly closed container in a dry, well-ventilated place. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and avoid forming dust or aerosols. Provide adequate ventilation wherever dust is generated, and wear suitable gloves and eye protection when handling.
The standard MK-MoS2-xxx / MKN-MoS2-xxx SDS classifies molybdenum disulfide as Acute Toxicity (Inhalation), Category 4, with hazard statement H332: Harmful if inhaled. Possible irritation of the respiratory tract, skin and eyes is also noted. DOT, IMDG and IATA transport status is listed as not dangerous goods. Review the SDS before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does ~1.5 micron APS mean?
APS refers to the average particle size. MK-MoS2-15 is listed at around 1.5 micron APS (superfine grade), which should not be read as the complete particle-size distribution.
What applications can MK-MoS2-15 be evaluated for?
It can be evaluated for dry lubrication and as an additive in greases, oils, polymers, paints and coatings, including selected high-load, metal-forming and vacuum applications.
Is MoS2 suitable for high-load and vacuum lubrication?
The product-family brochure lists load-bearing ability up to 250,000 psi along with good lubricity under high vacuum. Performance should still be validated for the intended application.
How should molybdenum disulfide powder be stored and handled?
Keep the container tightly closed in a dry, well-ventilated place. Avoid generating dust and avoid skin or eye contact. Use suitable ventilation and the personal protective equipment described in the SDS.
Are the brochure and SDS specific to the 1.5 micron grade?
No. Common information is provided in the brochure and SDS for various grades of MoS2 powder. The product number, purity, particle size, SKU, price and pack options mentioned on this page are applicable for MK-MoS2-15.
